Newsbreak is Stealing Money From Their Writers (and I Can Prove It)

Update: Newsbreak has made this right. They’ve paid out what the piece was originally worth, though it’s still a good read so you can know what to look out for in freelance writing.

Imagine for a moment that you published an article two weeks ago. You typed up your draft, hammered out the necessary editing, sat back, looked at your finished product, and smiled — yes, this is good.

You clicked publish and went to sleep.

You were busy the next three days and didn’t have time to check your stats.

The story had gone viral while you weren’t paying attention. Your story made quite a bit of money, too. Viral stories are hard to come by, and you’d just hit the jackpot. Overjoyed, you head out to celebrate over dinner.

Then you wake up the following day, only to find $100 missing from the article’s earnings. These aren’t updated in real-time but once a day.

Figuring it’s an error, you decide to wait until the next day, but when you wake up the following morning, you notice that your earnings are down 90%.

The platform deleted money from your earnings — they just pressed click, and…
